VITAL STATISTICS
POPULATION
The Registrar- General's mid-year estimate of the civilian population of
Wimbledon, 56,990, shews an estimated decrease of 470 on the previous year,
although the natural increase by excess of births over deaths was 186.
All rates used in this report are based on the Registrar-General's
figures.
BIRTHS
The statistics supplied by the Registrar-General show that during the year
1961, the total number of registered live births belonging to Wimbledon was 892.
Of this number, 453 were males and 439 females. This gives a birth-rate of
15.65 per thousand of the population as compared with a rate of 15.40 per
thousand in 1960, and an average of 14.65 in the last five years.
A comparability factor has been supplied by the Registrar-General which
enables the birth-rate for Wimbledon to be compared with that for England and
Wales. The corrected birth-rate for Wimbledon for 1961 was 15.18 per thousand
of the population, whilst the rate for England and Wales was 17.4 and has
averaged 16.4 over the past five years.
STILLBIRTHS - The number of stillbirths registered during the year was 17
(8 males and 9 females), this being 3 more than last year. The stillbirth
rate for Wimbledon was 0.24 per thousand of the population, whilst that for
England and Wales was 0.30.
ILLEGITIMACY - Of the live births registered in 1961, 63 (31 males and
32 females) were illegitimate, this being 6 more than in the preceding year.
Three of the 17 stillbirths registered were illegitimate.
DEATHS
The total number of Wimbledon residents who died during 1961 was 706
(318 males and 388 females), giving a death-rate of 12.38 per thousand of
the population as compared with 11.62 per thousand for 1960. The corrected
death-rate for 1961 was 10.39 per thousand as compared with a rate of 12.0
per thousand for England and Wales.
The number of Wimbledon residents who died outside the Borough was 353,
whilst 392 persons not normally resident in Wimbledon died in institutions,
etc. in the Borough.
