of the
MEDICAL OFFICER
OF HEALTH
1961
Public Health Department,
Town Hall,
Wimbledon, S.W.19.
(Wimbledon 6262)
September 1962
To the Mayor, Aldermen and Councillors
of the Borough of Wimbledon.
Mr, Mayor, Ladies and Gentlemen,
I have the honour to submit the Annual Report on the work of the Public
Health Department for the year 1961. This Report is compiled in accordance
with the instructions contained in Circular 1/62 of the Ministry of Health,
and is on similar lines to previous years.
The Report shews that the health of the residents has been very good
during the year, and vital statistics compare favourably with those of the
country as a whole.
Live births numbered 892, giving Wimbledon a birth rate per thousand of
population of 15.18 which is the highest rate recorded in the Borough since
1948. Of the 892 live births, 63 or 7% were illegitimate. The live birth
rate for England and Wales for the year was 17.4.
Deaths from all causes numbered 706 as against 668 last year, giving a
death rate per thousand of the population of 10.39 compared with 9.88 in 1960
and 12.0 for England and Wales. The excess of births over deaths was 186
compared with 217 in the previous year.
The infant mortality rate shewed a further decline over last year.
Thirteen Wimbledon children under the age of one year died, giving an infant
mortality rate of 14.57 per thousand live births, compared with 17 deaths and
a rate of 19.20 in 1960. The infant mortality rate for England and Wales for
1961 was 21.6, the lowest figure on record.
The stillbirth rate per thousand live and still births was 15.95. This
was slightly higher than last year but compares favourably with the rate for
England and Wales which was 18.7.
