MINCED MEAT.
A quantity of minced meat was the subject of a complaint, and upon
examination a disintegrated blowfly was found in the meat. The specimen was
sent to the Public Analyst, who confirmed the presence of a complete blowfly
which had obviously been sold with the minced meat. The facts were reported
to the Health Committee, who instructed the Town Clerk to send a warning letter
that any future similar incident could result in legal proceedings.
POLISH RYE BREAD.
A rubber band was found in a loaf of Polish rye bread, and this was the
subject of a complaint. The Public Analyst was of opinion that the rubber
band had been baked in the loaf of bread. The facts were reported to the
Health Committee, and a warning letter was sent to the Bakery firm concerned.
VEAL. HAH AND EGG PIE.
Black pellet-like objects on the top crust of a wrapped veal, ham and egg
pie were the subject of a complaint. These pellets had the appearance of rat
droppings, but upon examination they were found to consist of a mixture of
carbonised flour and fat. As a result of correspondence, the manufacturers
took steps to prevent a recurrence of this incident.
WHITE BREAD (1).
Part of a sliced wrapped loaf of white bread was found to contain shreds
of tobacco. Legal proceedings were instituted against the Baker concerned for
selling a loaf which was not of the quality demanded by the purchaser. The
Defendant pleaded guilty and was fined £5, and was ordered to pay £2.2.0. costs.
WHITE BREAD (2).
As the result of a complaint a loaf of white bread was found to be fouled
upon the top crust with bird droppings and showed signs of having been pecked
away by birds. The Public Analyst confirmed this opinion. Legal proceedings
were instituted against the Bakery firm concerned, who pleaded guilty to a
charge of selling a loaf of bread not of the quality demanded by the purchaser.
The Defendants were fined £15, and were ordered to pay £3.3«0. costs.
WHITE BREAD (3).
A sliced wrapped loaf of white bread containing foreign matter was
submitted to the Public Analyst for examination. The foreign matter was found
to consist of dough slightly discoloured by compounds of iron and containing
