POLIOMYELITIS VACCINATION
Ample supplies of vaccine enabled poliomyelitis vaccination to continue
unabated throughout 196O In February a further extension of the scheme was
announced to include all persons up to the age of 40 years and certain other
priority classes.
The initial response to the extended schane was very poor, as it was
throughout the country, and in an effort to improve the acceptance rate in
the 26 - 40 years age group a Poliomyelitis Vaccination Campaign was organised
in Wimbledon and Merton and Morden during the week 26th September - 1st October,
The Campaign was conducted with the use of a Mobile Unit equipped with a
Public Address System, and was based at various strategic points in Wimbledon
and Merton and Morden. A total of 781 persons received their first injections
during "Polio Week," and the Unit returned to the same points four weeks later
to give the second injections.
This Campaign and associated publicity increased the interest in poliomyelitis
vaccination, but this particular age group are reluctant to avail
themselves of the benefits of vaccination, and despite our efforts the acceptance
rate at the end of 1960 had risen to only 22%.
