French ice.
A bar of French ice confectionery which was manufactured in
Wimbledon, was the subject of a complaint from an outside district.
The Public Analyst reported that one of the ingredients (coconut)
possessed a slightly rancid taste and smell, although the chemical
analysis did not indicate that any significant decomposition had occurred.
As the result of negotiations steps were taken by the manufacturers to
insert a warranty slip in each packet of confectionery. By this means
it was hoped that the confectionery would be sold and consumed within
a certain date after leaving the factory. A further sample taken at a
later date proved satisfactory.
Legal Proceedings.
A retailer was summoned under the provisions of the Food and
Drugs Act, 1955 for selling a loaf of bread in which was embedded a
strip of metal. The defendant pleaded guilty and was fined £5. Costs
awarded amounted to £5.
