ANNUAL REPORT
OF THE
MEDICAL OFFICER
OF HEALTH
1956
Health Department,
Town Hall,
Wimbledon, S.W.19.
August, 1957.
To The Mayor, Aldermen and Councillors
of the Borough of Wimbledon.
Mr. Mayor, Ladies and Gentlemen,
I have the honour to submit the Annual Report on the work of the
Public Health Department for the year 1956, having been appointed
your Medical Officer of Health following the retirement of Dr. Ellis.
During the whole of the period to which all sections of the Report refer,
Dr. Harold Ellis was your Medical Officer of Health, and I should first
of all like to pay tribute to his work as Medical Officer to the Borough
from his appointment on 4th February, 1929, until his retirement on 3rd
January, 1957. I was closely associated with Dr. Ellis in his work since
I was first appointed as Deputy Medical Officer of Health to the Borough
in January 1939. Dr. Ellis was most conscientious and devoted to his
work, which he carried out with great thoroughness and ability. He
set himself a high standard. Matters great and small, were dealt with
in a clear-sighted manner and with unruffled courtesy. His sense of fairness,
tact, and consideration to all, made him well liked by his staff, his
colleagues in other Departments and his fellow Medical Officers of
Health of the County districts of Surrey.
I am pleased to report that the health of the Borough during 1956
was good and there were no special outbreaks of infectious disease.
