58,070, shews a decrease of 80 on the previous year, although
the natural increase by excess of births over deaths was 179.
All rates used in this report are based on the Registrar-General's
figures.
BIRTHS.
The statistics supplied by the Registrar-General show that during
the year 1955, the total number of registered live births belonging to
Wimbledon was 781. Of this number, 405 were males and 376 females.
This gives a birth-rate of 13.45 per thousand of the population as compared
with a rate of 13.48 per thousand in 1954, and an average of
13.28 in the last five years.
A comparability factor has been supplied by the Registrar-General
which enables the birth-rate for Wimbledon to be compared with that
for England and Wales. The corrected birth-rate for Wimbledon for

and Wales is 15.0 and has averaged 15.3 over the past five years.
Stillbirths - The number of stillbirths registered during the year
was 8 (6 males and 2 females), this being 10 fewer than last year. The

while that for England and Wales was 0.35.
Illegitimacy - Of the live births registered in 1955, 34 (20 males
