ANNUAL REPORT
OF THE
MEDICAL OFFICER
OF HEALTH
1951
Public Health Department,
Town Hall,
Wimbledon, S.W.I9.
August, 1952.
To The Mayor, Aldermen and Councillors
of the Borough of Wimbledon.
Mr. Mayor, Ladies and Gentlemen,
I have the honour to submit the Annual Report on the work of the
Public Health Department for the year 1951. This report is compiled
in accordance with the instructions contained in Circular 42/51 of the
Ministry of Health.
From the statistics it will be seen that the corrected death-rate for
the Borough in 1951 was 10.93 per thousand as compared with 12.5
for England and Wales. The infantile mortality rate was 20.41 per
thousand live births, the comparative figure for England and Wales
being 29.6. For the third year in succession there were no maternal
deaths amongst women resident in Wimbledon.
With regard to infectious diseases, 1,158 cases were notified during
1951 as compared with 668 during 1950. This increase was largely
due to an outbreak of measles.
No cases of diphtheria occurred during the year. Four cases of
poliomyelitis were notified. Three of these cases were associated with
paralysis, and one proved fatal.
