INFANTILE MORTALITY.
During 1946 there were twenty four deaths of infants under one
year of age, giving an infantile-mortality rate for Wimbledon of 23
per thousand live births, as compared with a rate of 43 for England
and Wales.
During 1945 the infantile-mortality rate for Wimbledon was 36
as compared with a rate of 46 for England and Wales.
Only one of the twenty four infant deaths during 1946 was due
to gastro-enteritis. No fewer than thirteen of these twenty four
deaths occurred during the first week of life. Seven of these were due
to congenital defects, and five of the remainder to prematurity.
The total number of neo-natal deaths (i.e. deaths occurring during
the first month of life), was seventeen, giving a neo-natal death
rate of 16.3 per thousand live births.
The following table shows the causes of, and ages at death, together
with the Ward distribution.
