17. PARENTS' PAYMENTS.
The parents of children attending public elementary
schools are required to contribute towards the cost of treatment
in accordance with approved scales adopted by the Education
Committee. Contributions from parents are required
in respect of treatment given at the Minor Ailment and Dental
Clinics, operative treatment for tonsils and adenoids, and
hospital treatment under the orthopedic scheme. No charge
is made for the examination of children at the Refraction
Clinic but the parents are required to pay the cost of the
spectacles which are obtained for their children at a contract
price. In exceptional cases of financial difficulty the Committee,
after considering all the circumstances, provide the
spectacles free of charge.
Where children are receiving residential treatment for
other conditions under arrangements made by the Education
Committee, the financial circumstances of the parents are
considered in each case and their contributions assessed
accordingly. These latter cases include children suffering
from rheumatism and heart disease, delicate children, etc.
18. HEALTH EDUCATION.
The National Health Campaign was inaugurated in
October. The first Health Day in Wimbledon was on Thursday,
14th October, and commenced with a morning display of films
dealing with health matters in one of the local cinemas. Senior
scholars from all the elementary schools were present and were
accompanied by teachers. In addition, parties of senior
scholars gave physical training demonstrations at the evening
meeting in the Town Hall.
The second health day was held on 18th November, and a
display of films was again arranged in the morning. The
scholars on this occasion were taken from the secondary
schools.
Leaflets dealing with each month's subject were supplied
to all the schools for distribution.
