School Disinfection.—With the exception of one Department
all the Public Elementary Schools in the district were
thoroughly disinfected during the summer vacation.
Yard Paving.—In the course of the inspections made during
the year, 47 Yards were found to be in an unsatisfactory
state, due either to the absence of any paving or the defective
condition of that which did exist.
Stable Refuse.—Continued attention has been paid to the
mews and stable yards in the district, 28 visits having been
made to such premises during the year.
Inspections under the Factory and Workshop Act,, 1901.—
There are 464 factories, workshops and workplaces on the
Register, to which 74 visits of inspection were made. Four
written notices were served, referring to sanitary conveniences
and other nuisances.
Shops Acts, 1912-1913.—Two thousand two hundred and
twenty-three visits were made to the occupied shops in the
district for the purpose of observing contraventions of the
Acts.
In one case legal proceedings were instituted as under—
Against a firm for failing to close three of their shops
on the usual weekly half-holiday. Fined £4 4s. 0d.
(including costs).
As mentioned in my Report for the year 1925, a number
of contraventions were noted during Christmas week of that
year. The occupiers of these premises were subsequently
summoned before the local Magistrates with the following
results:—
(a) For failing to close shop on weekly half-holiday.
Fined £1 and £3 3s. 0d. costs.
(b) For failing to close shop on weekly half-holiday.
Fined £1 and £2 2s. 0d. costs.
(c) For failing to close shops (two) on weekly halfholiday.
Fined £1 and £2 2s. 0d. costs in each
case.
(d) For failing to close shop on weekly half-holiday
Fined £1 and £1 1s. 0d. costs.
Towards the end of November, the Home Secretary made
an Order suspending the operation of the General Early
Closing Order from 17th to 24th December, 1926, inclusive.
