The School Medical Service in Relation to Public Elementary
Schools.
School Hygiene.
(i) Lighting:—Electric lighting was substituted for gas
lighting in Hay dons Road School, Girls' and Infants'
Departments.
(ii) School Desks:—A special report on school desks was
submitted to the Education Committee during the year.
The equipment in schools was summarised as follows:—
Good:—Pelham and Dundonald—all departments,
Queen's Infants, and Russell Road Infants.
Satisfactory:—Queen's, Boys and Girls, Haydons
Girls.
Fairly satisfactory:-Wimbledon Park, Cottenham
Park, Central, Russell Road Mixed, Effra Road,
Haydons Infants.
Poor:—Haydons Road Boys.
The Committee decided to begin replacing the old desks
in Haydons Road Boys' School by modern dual desks, and,
where possible, old desks were reconstructed to meet modern
requirements.
(iii) I am indebted to Mr. J. Bow en, Borough Surveyor
and Engineer, for the following particulars in regard to
alterations in heating and decorations in schools carried out
during 1923:—
Heating:—Dundonald School:—New Boiler: Hot-water
system remodelled and extended to the Manual Training
Centre.
Queen's Road School:—New Boiler: Old system overhauled
and repaired.
Queen's Road Special School and Special Subjects:—
New Boiler to serve the Special School and Kitchens
No. 1 and 2.
Wimbledon Park School:—New section added to boiler
and an accelerator pump driven by electric motor.
Decorations, Repairs, etc.
Queen's Road School:—Periodic external painting of
main building, Manual Training Centre, Playground
Shelters, Caretaker's Cottage, Iron Classroom and
Fences, etc., wall of back playground replaced by
fencing.
Manual Training Centre:—Defective ceilings repaired
and internal decoration throughout.
