CARE OF THE UNMARRIED MOTHER
The Chelmsford Diocesan Moral Welfare Association acts for the Council and provides a
Home for unmarried mothers and their children at "Carville" , 43 West Avenue Road, Walthamstow.
Accommodation for 16 mothers and babies is available.
The following information regarding the work at the home during 1965 is provided by Miss
M.H.Ward, the Superintendent:-
"The age of the residents still continues to rise and the average during the
past year was 19½, the youngest being sixteen and the oldest thirty-four.
The number of adoptions remain almost the same, 18 last year as against 19
the previous year.
10 mothers returned to the parental home with their babies and 3 other mothers
with their babies found a home with relatives. The rest of the babies were fostered,
none being admitted to residential nurseries.
During the year 4 mothers married the baby's father shortly after leaving
"Carville"
For roughly 20% of the residents it was their second illegitimate child.
We still maintain a happy relationship with more and more "old girls", either
through letters or unheralded visits."
