With all the improvement recorded in infectious diseases over
the years, more effective immunising materials are being constantly
sought. During the year the Minister of Health authorised the
introduction of Oral Poliomyelitis Vaccine, which is easily and
painlessly administered. It promises to be a most effective weapon
not only for the prevention but also for the control of an outbreak.
This year also saw the introduction of immunisation against
Tetanus and its inclusion in a combined triple vaccine for primary
courses.
Included in this report is an account by Mr. Southgate of the
specially designed bungalows for the handicapped in Warburton
Terrace. There is, of course, need for more, but it is gratifying
to think that the Council have seen fit to make this provision
notwithstanding the welter of demand for ordinary housing.
This has a special interest for the Health Department as more
and more time and attention is now given to the handicapped by all
categories of our staff.
I wish to thank Members of the Health and Health Area Subcommittees
for their interest and support during the year; also to
all members of staff.
I am pleased to acknowledge my indebtedness to the many who
have contributed to this Report.
I have the honour to be,
Your obedient Servant,
M IATKINS
Medical Officer of Health.
