NOTIFICATION OF BIRTHS
2,066 births (642 of which belonged to other areas) were
notified during the year under the Public Health Act, 1936.
Notifications were received as follows: Doctors, 353; Midwives,
1,699; Others, 14.
Also included are 51 still-births, 15 of which belonged to
other areas. Of the total, 13 occurred outside the Borough.
NEO NATAL MORTALITY
The number of infants dying under one month during 1957
was 22, i.e. a rate of 16 per 1,000 live births.
INFANT MORTALITY
The deaths of infants under one year were as follows:—

The death rates of infants under one year of age per 1,000
live births in Walthamstow when calculated on the totals given
by the Registrar-General are therefore:—
Legitimate, 22.6; Illegitimate, 1.5; Total, 24.1.
The death rate of illegitimate infants per 1,000 illegitimate live
births was 34.4.
Of the 32 deaths, 21 occurred in the first month of life, including
17 in the first week, the age group distribution being as under:—

Two deaths occurred at home and thirty in hospitals and the
principal causes of death were as follows:—
Prematurity, 16; Acute Pulmonary Conditions, 5; Congenital
Abnormalities, 9; All Other Causes, 2.
Although the Infant Mortality Rate for Walthamstow shows
some increase on last year (18.7) it must be appreciated that the
number of deaths is now so small that a small fluctuation from year
to year produces a marked effect on the rate.
