VACCINATION AND RE-VACCINATION OF
DEPARTMENTAL STAFF
The staff of the department and ambulance drivers, especially
those who would be expected to deal with smallpox in the event of
cases occurring, were again offered facilities for vaccination and
revaccination. The number vaccinated was 10.
The following is a summary of the work carried out during the
year :—
Total number of immunisations completed :
(a) School age | 259 |
(b) Pre-school age | 1,093 |
Total | 1,352 |
(c) Number already immunised having reinforcing dose | 1,530 |
Details of the immunisations included in the above total are set out below :—
No. completed at schools | 223 |
No. completed at welfare centres | 468 |
No. completed at Town Hall Clinic | 157 |
No. completed at " Brookscroft " | 99 |
No. completed by general practitioners | 405 |
Total | 1,352 |
The total for 1953 was 1,196.
146 children included in the above figures were given combined
whooping cough/diphtheria injections by General Practitioners.
This prophylactic was not supplied by the County Council.
There have only been two confirmed cases of diphtheria in the
last eight years and no deaths.
On the other hand, the fall in the number of children immunised,
especially in the 0—1 age group, gives rise to misgiving,
especially since the target of immunisation in this group is 75% of
babies before reaching the age of one year.
