(c) Dental.—Mr. L. W. Elmer, L.D.S., Senior Dental Officer,
reports as follows:—
"As in past years every expectant and nursing mother and
pre-school child referred from the welfare centres has been
examined. The numbers have been about the same as in 1952,
which suggests that 'saturation point' may have been reached.
"I am pleased to report that during 1953 a larger proportion
of both mothers and children have completed
treatment, and have been made dentally fit.
"In 1952, 444 mothers were found to require treatment
and only 154 were made dentally fit. In 1953, the corresponding
figures were 439 and 207, a definite improvement.
This is possibly due at least in part, to the provision of free
dentures, 71 being supplied in 1953, as against only 16 in 1952.
"Of the children, 356 completed treatment out of 483
requiring it. Last year the corresponding figures were 290 out
of 478."
