mother had not attended the welfare centre and had previously
received the attention of the N.S.P.C.C. Inspector. The other two
cases were aged one and ten months respectively : the younger
died as a result of a very precipitate labour in rather unusual
surroundings ; the elder weighing 4 lbs. 8 ozs., died of prematurity
and atelectasis.
The deaths of all infants dying under one year of age are
classified in the accompanying table, according to cause and age.
Of the forty-one, 29 are regarded as unavoidable, and 12 preventable—the
cause of death being pneumonia in 9 and one each from
meningitis, diarrhoea and injury at birth. In the last two months
of the year, there was some evidence of a virus pneumonia which
did not respond to antibiotic treatment.
