C—SANITARY CIRCUMSTANCES OF THE AREA
Water.—The authority responsible is the Metropolitan Water
Board. Routine tests are carried out by the Board, and the usual
practice was continued of notifying the Board of all actual or
suspected cases of enteric fever. The Board then arranged special
tests at the addresses concerned. All were negative in 1953. All
dwelling houses in the area are supplied direct with piped water.
The information included in the report for 1951 in respect of
Ministry of Health Circular 42/51 also applied to 1953.

Of the 1,496 intimation notices served, 252 were in rcspect of
business premises and the remainder (1,244) related to defects in
private houses. Of the latter figure, 1,041 were complied with
without resort to statutory procedure.
Owing to the failure of owners to comply with Abatement
Notices served under Section 93 of the Public Health Act 1936,
it was necessary to institute legal proceedings in 16 cases. An order
was made by the Justices in one instance, a cost of £1 1s. Od. being
awarded. In 15 cases the Summonses were withdrawn on payment
of costs of £1 Is. 0d., the required work having been undertaken
before the date of Hearing.
