Two midwives in private practice undertook 13 cases as midwives,
and 29 cases as maternity nurses.
Gas and Air Analgesia.—The Ambulance Service provided
transport facilities for gas and air apparatus.
A total of 243 patients on the District received gas and air
analgesia, representing a percentage of 69.8 of District confinements.
Midwives acting as Maternity Nurses.—During the year the
number of maternity cases (i.e., where responsibility for the case
was taken by the doctor) decreased to 106, or 30.4 percent. of the
total.
Previously, this percentage has increased steadily since the
"appointed day." In 1947 it was 11%, in the period 1st January,
1948, to the appointed day, 11%, from the appointed day to the
end of 1948, 18%, during 1949, 21%, during 1950, 28.8%, and
during 1951, 32.9%.
Emergency Unit.—This Unit, stationed at Thorpe Coombe
Maternity Hospital, was called out to one Walthamstow case during
1952.
Maternity Outfits.—348 outfits were issued.
Training of Pupil Midwives.—Thorpe Coombe Maternity
Hospital is a training school for both Parts I and II, the latter in
association with home confinements on the "district." A total of
26 pupils successfully underwent Part II training during 1952.
HEALTH VISITING

Health Visiting Staff.—The equivalent of whole-time Health
Visitors at the end of the year was 8.1, and one Superintendent.
