A total of 128 Walthamstow patients were unable to book
accommodation at Thorpe Coombe. If they were unable to make
their own alternative arrangements, bookings at other Maternity
Hospitals were made for them through Thorpe Coombe.
The grounds for admission to Thorpe Coombe were:—
(1) First Confinements.
(2) Medical and Obstetrical.
(3) Unsuitable home/social conditions.

NOTIFICATION OF BIRTHS
1,942 births (366 of which belonged to other areas) were notified
during the year under the Public Health Act, 1936.
Notifications were received as follows:— Doctors, 311; Midwives,
1,603; others, 28.
Included in the above are 366 births which were notified as
having occurred outside the Borough.
Also included are 40 stillbirths, four of which belonged to
other areas. Of the total, nine occurred outside the Borough.
NEO-NATAL MORTALITY
The neo-natal mortality is the number of infants dying under
one month per 1,000 live births. During 1952, 23 infants died in
the first four weeks of life, a rate of 15.2.
