Population.—The Registrar-General's Estimate of the civilian
population at mid-year, 1950, is 122,700, a decrease of 700 on the
previous figure.
Census 1951.—The preliminary report in regard to the Census
held on 8th April, 1951, shows that the population of the Borough
then was 121,069, i.e., 57,113 males and 63,956 females. This
total is a decrease of 11,903 on the 1931 census population. This
decrease is shared (but to a lesser extent in the case of Waltham
stow) with London Administrative County, East and West Ham,
Tottenham and Leyton.
The census showed Walthamstow to be the 44th largest town
in England and Wales. It was the 8th in size amongst Non-County
Boroughs and Urban Districts, and there were no fewer than 45
County Boroughs with smaller populations.
Employment.—According to information kindly supplied by
Mr. Percy C. Graham, Manager of the Local Employment Exchange,
approximately 800 men and 350 women were on an average placed
in employment each month during the year 1950, through the
placing machinery of the Exchange. The number of persons
insured under the National Insurance Acts, employed in the whole
area covered by the Exchange, comprising the Boroughs of Walthamstow,
Leyton, Chingford, Woodford and Wanstead, was approximately
82,000. Of this number, it is estimated that about 40,000
are employed in Walthamstow. During 1950, the average number
of persons unemployed in the whole area was 800 men and 240
women ; these included approximately 100 disabled men and 20
disabled women.
Extracts from Vital Statistics.—The Registrar-General's midyear
1950 estimate of the civilian population (viz. 122,700) has
been used for the calculation of all vital statistics.
