The natural increase of population, i.e., excess of births over
deaths was 825.
The usual comparison of rates with those for the whole country
is shown in the table on the following page.
Births.—Births are dealt with under the Maternity and Child
Welfare Section of the Report.
Deaths.—The Registrar-General's classification of causes of
death by sex totals is given.
The total number of deaths in 1948 (1,243) compares with
1,315 in 1947, the respective death rates per 1,000 population being
10.1 and 10.7.
