A third day nursery was opened at Handsworth Avenue.
82 per cent. of all live births attended child welfare centres.
80 per cent. of all expectant mothers attended antenatal
clinics.
Post-graduate lectures for midwives were organised and
made available to the midwives of adjoining local authorities.
The Municipal Ambulance Service carried 6,362 patients
for over 33,000 miles.
1,000 treatments were given at the chiropody clinic and
some 2,000 at the gynaecological clinic.
104 patients from other local authority areas were treated
at the Council's Infectious Diseases Hospital.
1945—Treatments were nearly 10,000 at the Foot Clinic, over 4,000
at the Skin Clinic and over 2,000 at the Women's Clinic.
There were nearly 1,000 confinements at Thorpe Coombe.
The Municipal Ambulance Service was staffed by the
Council in lieu of Civil Defence and three ambulances (with
two in reserve) and one motor-car were provided.
Additional sessions were provided at the Child Guidance
Clinic.
1946—Health services returned rapidly to pre-war level. Live
births totalled 2,544 and 86% of the children born were
taken to the various welfare centres.
The number of confinements at Thorpe Coombe reached
a new high level at 1,247. Infant mortality at 34 per 1,000,
remained low.
The County Council requested the Walthamstow Committee
for Education to expand the Child Guidance Service so as
to cope with children from the Borough of Leyton and
from the Forest Division.
The Education Committee agreed to an increase of 3 dental
teams and to the establishment of 3 new treatment centres.
1947—The population increased to over 122,000.
Another low record was achieved by an infant mortality rate
of 29 per 1,000 live births, and a new high peak of 2,670
live births. There were nearly 73,000 attendances at welfare
centres.
Ambulance calls increased by 35% and mileage by 44%
over 1946.
The Municipal Dental Scheme was extended by the provision
of a full-time dental team and by the establishment of a
dental workshop.
