To The Chairman and Members of the
Walthamstow Committee for Education.
Ladies and Gentlemen,
I beg to present herewith a report on the work of the School
Health Service for 1947.
Staff shortage, medical, nursing and clerical to some extent
affected the work of the service.
The Architect's report shows the increased attention paid to
maintenance and improvements. The attention paid to the needs
of the school meals service and to sanitary conditions is particularly
noteworthy.
The nutritional findings appear to show that there has been
no marked deterioration. Cleanliness surveys show a marked
reduction in the amount of uncleanliness.
Dr. Francis Clarke's report on the ear clinic draws attention
to the marked reduction in cases of chronic ear discharge—a very
different picture from twenty years ago.
Dr. Watkins contributes an interesting article on the incidence,
treatment and prevention of plantar warts.
The work of the Child Guidance Clinic continues to grow and
the difficulties of accommodation have not yet been overcome.
Once more I have to record my appreciation of your consideration
and that of the Borough Education Officer and his staff, and
the good work of all the staff concerned in the School Health
Service.
I am,
Your obedient Servant,
A. T. W. POWELL,
Borough School Medical Officer.
