Many school and home visits have been paid in addition to
the interviewing of parents in the Clinic.
Attendances at the clinic have been regular, and I should like
to take this opportunity to express appreciation to the teaching
staffs, and particularly Head Teachers, for their constant
co-operation.
(viii) Convalescent Home Treatment.—228 children were sent
away for treatment during 1947. There were 45 remaining in
convalescent homes and hospital schools on December 31st, 1947.
14. FULL TIME COURSES OF HIGHER EDUCATION
FOR BLIND, DEAF, DEFECTIVE AND
EPILEPTIC STUDENTS
The Authority for the provision of such courses is the Essex
County Council.
15. NURSERY SCHOOL
Miss F. D. Harris, the Head Teacher of the Nursery School,
reports as follows:—
During 1947 we had 25 cases of measles, 18 of whooping cough
and 3 of chicken pox. Apart from these and the usual colds the
children's health was very good. A School Nurse has visited us
about twice a week, and has found very few minor ailments. Each
Thursday, when necessary, children have attended the School
Clinic at the Child Welfare Centre. Owing to the shortage of
medical staff it has not been possible to arrange for children to be
medically examined on admission. However, they have all had
this examination before the end of the term in which they have
been admitted.
The children benefited greatly from the fine summer weather,
and spent many happy hours in the garden. In contrast, the
increasing number of "under-fives" playing in the streets is
distressing. The waiting list for the Nursery is never-ending, and
a child's name has to be on it for at least a year before he is admitted.
16. SECONDARY, GRAMMAR & TECHNICAL SCHOOLS
(a) Dental Inspection and Treatment.—Reference has been made
in Section 7 (h) to the dental inspection and treatment of pupils
attending Secondary, Grammar and Technical Schools.
