Miss M. L. Balls, the Head Teacher, reports as follows:—
During the year, the work at the Myope Centre was still
accomplished at the Hale End Open Air School.
The school year was uneventful.
The weather during the spring term was severe enough to
cause much illness among the children, and gas heaters were
installed in an effort to render working conditions more comfortable.
During the beautiful summer weather the children were able
to work out in the sunshine and their studies benefited from the
very congenial surroundings.
At the end of the autumn term arrangements were made for
the Myope Centre to be removed to Wood Street School.
Visitors during the year included parties of students from
training colleges for teachers and public health schools for training
health visitors who will work under the National Health Scheme.
Dr. Sheppard paid her usual visits during the year and also
made many special examinations of children at the school clinic.
We would like to thank her for her continued help and encouragement
in our work.
During the year the eyes of two boys and one girl improved
sufficiently to allow of their return to secondary schools.
One boy left the centre and is learning french polishing, and
one girl left and is learning to make suit cases.
(ii) Deaf School—Miss V. K. Mitchell, the Head Teacher,
reports as follows:—
In January, 1947, the school had 13 children on the roll
between the ages of two and 15 years. There were 13 boys and
two girls, 13 totally deaf within the meaning of the Act, one
partially deaf and one backward child (it is impossible to decide
yet whether this child is deaf or not).
