ASSISTED MILK SCHEME
Number of applications during 1946 75
Number of families assisted 61
The National Milk Scheme operated from July, 1940, and the
above represents applications for special brands of dried milk not
supplied under that scheme.
HOME HELPS
Financial assistance up to 25s. Od. per week for two weeks
is granted on the assessment scale laid down by your Council.
The appointment of a whole-time Home Help was sanctioned
during 1945, but not proceeded with because no suitable applicant
could be found, probably owing to the low rate of pay under the
Hetherington Scale, although the offer of a more attractive wage
during 1946 produced the same result.
Applicants are therefore required to make their own arrangements.
Failing this the Health Visitors are usually able to arrange
a suitable Home Help.
Home Helps are, however, almost as difficult to obtain as
Domestic Helps, and in view of this the pre-war restriction in
regard to relatives has been waived for the time being.
During the year there were 191 applications for assistance, of
which two were granted free, 116 were granted at part cost and
73 were rejected as they were over the scale laid down by the
Council.
The demand for Home Helps has been as follows during the
past eight years 1939 (125); 1940 (128); 1941 (105); 1942
(140) ; 1943 (175); 1944 (133); 1945 (130); 1946 (118).
PRIORITY SHEET DOCKETS
Priority Dockets for sheets were supplied, on behalf of the
Board of Trade, to expectant mothers who were being confined
at home, on production of a certificate from the Midwife stating
that home confinement was hampered by lack of sheets.
During 1946, 760 mothers were supplied with 2,100 dockets.
STERILISED MATERNITY OUTFITS
A total of 801 sets were supplied and 165 outfits were issued
below cost price.
INSTITUTIONAL TREATMENT
No children were sent to Institutions under your Committee's
arrangements.
