Population. — The Registrar - General's Estimate of the
population at mid-year, 1946, is 118,050, an increase of 14,730
on the previous figure.
The graph given below clearly shows the decline in the
population during the war years.
The evacuation of the population can be seen in the steep
decline to 1941. This is followed by the small but steady drift
back until 1945, after which there is a steep rise, which, if continued,
will bring the population up to pre-war level by 1948.
Unemployment.—According to information kindly supplied by
Mr. Percy C. Graham, Manager of the Local Employment
Exchange, approximately 1,000 men and 200 women were placed
in employment every month during the year 1946, through the
placing machinery of the Leyton Employment Exchange. The
number of insured persons employed in the whole area covered by
the Exchange, comprising the Boroughs of Walthamstow, Leyton,
Chingford, Wanstead and Woodford, was 61,000 in July, 1946.
Of these, it is estimated that about 31,000 were employed in
Walthamstow. During 1946, the average number of persons
unemployed in the whole of the exchange area was 630 men and
85 women; these included 150 disabled men and 10 disabled
