B.—GENERAL PROVISION OF HEALTH SERVICES
IN THE AREA
1 :—(i) Public Health Officers of the Authority :—Resignations
and appointments during the year are given at the beginning of
the Report and also in the Maternity and Child Welfare Section
of the Report.
(ii) (a) Laboratory Facilities :—(See I. D. Section.)
(b) Ambulance Facilities :—
Municipal Service.
When service is required it should be stated whether an
ambulance or ambulance car is required, and application should be
made as follows : —
Accident and Emergency.—Dial " 999 " and ask for Ambulance.
Removal, etc.—Dial LARkswood 4556 (A medical certificate is
necessary).
Removals. Accidents. Treatment. Maternity. Others. Total. Mileage.
1946 1,522 543 3,760 739 98 6,662 31,123
1945 1,547 541 3,446 501 23 6,058 34,189
The total number of calls is 604 more than for 1945, an
increase of nearly 10 per cent.
The considerable increase in maternity removals will be noted.
This reflects the pressure caused by the increased birth rate of 1946.
"Other calls" have increased on account of the transport
facilities provided for District Midwives since 1st June, 1946.
Transport is available at night when the public service is not available
or is restricted and, of course, in emergencies.
The ambulance fleet, staff and garage arrangements remain as
detailed in the previous report.
The voluntary assistance of members of the St. John Ambulance
Brigade has continued and totalled 243 duties during the year. This
assistance enabled extra vehicles to be available at night and at weekends.
First Aid Examination.—The Council gratefully accepted the
offer made by the St. John Ambulance Brigade through Dr. J. L.
McKenzie Brown, O.B.E., and Mr. V. G. Turner to conduct a course
of First Aid lectures and demonstrations for the ambulance staff free
of charge.
At the conclusion of the course two of the men obtained
Vouchers, ten obtained First Aid Certificates and one failed.
Provision has been made in the current financial year 1947/8
for the provision of two new ambulances, but it is doubtful if these
will be supplied during the year.
