PUERPERAL PYREXIA.
44 cases of Puerperal Pyrexia were notified during 1943.
The notifications were received from the following sources: -
Maternity Hospital, 33; Hospitals outside the area, 4; and
General Practitioners, 6.
The puerperal pyrexia rate for 1943 was 23.3 per 1,000 births,
as compared with 18.2 in 1942, and the mortality due to puerperal
sepsis was 13.6 per cent. of the cases of puerperal pyrexia notified
ABORTION.
CIRCULAR 1661.- The number of cases in which medical aid
notices were issued during 1943 by midwives in accordance with
Rule E of the Central Midwives Board was:-
Threatened abortion and miscarriage Nil.
Abortion and miscarriage Nil.
OPHTHALMIA NEONATORUM.
The number of cases notified during the last two years were
two in 1943, and one in 1942.
MATERNAL MORTALITY.
During 1943, nine deaths associated however slightly with
pregnancy and child-bearing were investigated for the completion
of enquiry forms.
Particulars relating to the nine deaths are given in the
accompanying table, from which it will be seen that five were
due to abortion, three being instrumental, and two natural.
The following table shows the maternal mortality rates for
1943 (calculated on the nine deaths assigned by the RegistrarGeneral
to Headings 29 and 30).
