INFANT MORTALITY.
The death rates of infants under one year of age per 1,000
live births when calculated on the totals given by the
Registrar General are, therefore;-
Legitimate, 40; Illegitimate, 32; Total 40.
The Infant Mortality rate for other areas during 1943 was
as follows:-
England and Wales 49
126 County Boroughs and Great Towns
(including London) 58
148 Smaller Towns (25,000 to 53,000) 46

NE0-NATAL MORTALITY.
The Neo-Natal Mortality is the number of deaths of infants
under one month per 1,000 live births. During 1943, 48 infants
died in the first four weeks of life, yielding a rate of 26.2.
For the last ten years in England and Wales the neo-natal
deaths have been approximately one-half of the total deaths
under 1 year of age.
The neo-natal mortality for England and Wales for the
decennium 1921-30 was 33.
The death-rate from Diarrhoea and Enteritis in children
under 1 year of age per 1,000 live births was 0.54.
CHILD WELFARE.
The equivalent of whole-time Municipal Health Visitors at
the end of the year was 7.5, equal to 1 whole-time Health Visitor
per 251 notified births, and one whole-time Health Visitor per
223 registered births during 1943.
A. MUNICIPAL SCHEME.
The detailed findings at first visits paid during 1943
are given in the following table, from which it will be seen
that of 1721 children, 1400, or 81.3%, were breast-fed on
first being visited, and 14, or .81%, had no separate sleeping
accommodation:-
