TO THE CHAIRMAN AND MEMBERS OF THE MATERNITY
ยป
AND CHILD WELFARE COMMITTEE.
Ladies and Gentlemen,
I beg to present, herewith, a report on
the work done during 1943.
The birth rate was higher than that for
1942, which in turn was the highest since 1925.
The infant death rate was 40 per 1,000
live births, a rate 18 per 1,000 less than that for
London Administrative County.
Home visits were nearly 4,000 more and
clinic attendances over 2,000 more than in 1942.
Unfortunately, the maternal mortality
rate was again high due largely to the occurrence of
five abortions, three of which were instrumental and two
of which were natural.
The admissions to Thorpe Coombe were the
highest ever recorded.
A second war-time day nursery was
opened.
I have again to thank you for your
consideration and to record the good work of the staff.
I have the honour to be,
Your obedient servant,
A.T. W. POWELL.
Medical Officer of Health.
