MUNICIPAL LABORATORY.

The following numbers of diphtheria swabs were examined during 1942:-

The total number of diphtheria specimens examined in 1942
was 344.
Direct examinations were done on 31 diphtheria speaimens, and
all were negative.
In addition, 63 specimens of urine were examined, as compared
with 57 in 1941.
A total of 594 tubes of culture media were made by Mr. West,
and of these 96 were sent to the Sanatorium.
In addition to the above, 61 primary vaccinations were recorded,
and 43 re-vaccinations
During 1942 the vaccinal condition of all school children
examined at Routine Medical Inspection was recorded, and a summary
of the findings for the year showed that 16.8 per cent, were
vaccinated.
No. of children vaccinated who were resident in Walthamstow,
but born elsewhere - 90.
PREVENTION OF BLINDNESS.
No action was necessary under Section 176 of the Public
Health Act, 1936, for the prevention of blindness or the treatment
of persons suffering from any disease of, or injury to, the eyes.
SGABIES.
In view of the increased incidence of scabies a special session
was allotted to this work at the Town Hall Clinic.on 2.7th.March 1942
and in October 1942 a special treatment centre was opened in the
Public Gas Cleansing Centre which had been erected at the rear
of the Public Baths.
Two slipper baths were installed, hot water was available from
the Public Baths and the entire staffing has been carried out
by the personnel of the Civil Defence Casualty Service under the
supervision of the trained nurses. All the personnel have given
excellent service.
Up to the end of 1942, 98 patients made a total of 165
attendances.
This arrangement was made possible with the co-operation of tne
Public Health, Public Baths, Emergency Committees and their
Officers.
GENERAL.- (1) The death rate per 100 admissions of infectious
disease patients was 1.59 and per 100 total admissions 1.94.
(ii) During the year the County Council continued the grant
payable by them in respect of infectious disease beds,
amounting to £425.
