Mr. J.E.//est, Housing Department, contributes the following:This
report and statistics are based on the year 1942/3
During the year there was a further deterioration of the housing
position generally in the Borough, due to the increased demands
for accommodation from families returning from evacuation and
other causes including normal growth of families and the large
number of war-time marriages. That housing problems were in
the fore-front is demonstrated by the many frequent parliamentary
and press notices on the subject. Much valuable work was done
by the reinstatement of premises damaged by enemy action, but the
number of premises resulting from these activities, fell far short
of the demand.
So far as the Council Estates are concerned, the following
statistical information is given:-
Number of vacancies arising on the Council Estates, including
properties repaired and brought back to use 40.
There were 28 transfers, involving 113 persons.
The premises let during the year totalled 32, comprising
six lettings to families, whose original home had been rendered
uninhabitable by ememy action, involving 24 persons.
24 normal lettings involving 105 persons, and two cases of
rehousing upon your recommendation, involving 9 persons.
As I indicated in my annual report, dated 8th.April, 1943,
there would appear to be reason to believe that there is much
overcrowding in the Borough and a number of cases on the Council
Estates. There is also considerable subletting in Council
houses.
During the year 1942/3, 142 requisitioned properties were let
accommodating 401 persons.
