Birthday Letters.- Letters were sent to the parents of all
infants following their first birthday and stressing the need
for protection against diphtheria. 834 letters were issued and
206 infants were brought and protected. 408 infants had left
the district. 8 infants were immunised by private practitioners.
Immunisation by General Practitioners.- Diphtheria prophylactic
is available to general practitioners. During 1941, 29 c. c's. of
alum precipitated toxrid were issued; this quantity is sufficient
to protect 29 children.
Scarlet Fever Immunisatifon.- There were no Dick tests for
Scarlet Fever during 1941.:-

The ttal number rf diphtheria specimens examined in 1941
was 324.
Direct examinations T/ere done rn 22 diphtheria specimens
nf which 4 were positive.
In addition, 57 specimens of urine were examined, as compared
vri tli 158 in 194C.
A trtal of 682 tubes rf culture media were made
and of these, 300 were sent t~ the Sanatorium.
ESSEX COUTY COUNCIL SCHEME.
The Essex County Council also provides facilities for
examination of pathological specimens, and the County Medical
Officer states that 1155 specimens were examined for local
practitioners during 1941 as fallows:-
Diphtheria swabs, 15; Sputa, 532; Typhoid specimens, 11;
Miscellaneous, 508;
VACCINATION.
Mr.E.Sharp, Vaccination Officer for the Area, has furnished
the following return for 1941:-

In addition to the above, 21 primary vaccinations were
recorded, and 13 re-vaccinations.
During 1941 the vaccinal condition of all schorl children
examined at Routine Medical Inspection was recorded, and a summary
of the findings for the year showed that 18.0 per cent. were
vaccinated.
HOSPITAL TREATMENT OF SMALLPOX.
As for previous reports.
PREVENTION OF BLINDNESS.
No action was necessary under Section 175 of the public Health
Act, 1935, for the prevention of blindness or the treatment of
persons suffering from any disease of, of injury to, the eyes.
