The natural decrease of population, i.e., excess of deaths
over births, was 32.
The usual comparison of vital statistics rates, with those
for the whole country, is shown in the table on the following page
BIRTHS.- Births are dealt with under the Maternity and Child
Welfare Section of the Report.
DEATHS.- The Registrar-General's classification of causes of
death by sex totals is given.
The total number of deaths in 1940 (1,607) compares with 1,312
during 1939, the respective death-rates per 1,000 population
being 10.5 and 14.6.
