ASSISTED MILK SCHEME.
Up to two pints of milk per day can now be granted to expectant
mothers at any time during pregnancy. A medical or midwife's
certificate as to pregnancy is required. Milk is granted free to
nursing mothers for the first 14 days following confinement. One
pint of milk per day is granted to ohildren up to 3 years of age.
In breast-fed infants this is equivalent to a grant to the nursing
mother. Dried milk is supplied if the infant is not breast-fed.
Children between 3 and 5 years of age are granted milk on medical
certificate only. Pasteurised milk sold under licence is insisted
upon.
Dried Milk, Cod Liver Oil, Parrish's Food, Virol, Cod Liver
Oil and Malt, etc., are supplied at the Welfare Centres at cost
price. Free issues are made on medical certificate. During 1938
Marmite, Glucose and Ovaltine were also made available for
expectant mothers.
Applications are made on special forms which give particulars
of income and rent and are scrutinised each week by lady members
of the Maternity and Child Welfare Committee who attend in rotation
in order to assess the applications on the scale which has
been approved.
Milk may either be granted free or at reduced cost, and the
following shows the amount and approximate cost of milk granted
by the Committee during 1938:—

Of the 6,960 applications, approximately 42 per cent, were from families where the father was unemployed.
