TO THE CHAIRMAN AND MEMBERS OF THE MATERNITY
AND CHILD WELFARE COMMITTEE.
Ladies and Gentlemen,
I beg to submit herewith a report on the Maternity and Child
Welfare services during 1938.
The year is notable for an increased volume of work and for
very favourable statistics. The total attendances in connection
with all welfare services, Municipal and Voluntary, were over
66,000. Greater use was made of the assisted milk scheme and
more home helps were provided. The Infant Mortality rate was
40 (England and Wales, 53); the Maternal Mortality rate was 1.78
(England and Wales, 2.97); and the neo-natal mortality was only
17.3.
I am again indebted to your Committee for every help and
consideration and to the staff for good work and loyalty.
I have the honour to be,
Your obedient Servant,
A. T. W. POWELL,
Medical Officer of Health.
