Repair Costs.
In 1934. I endeavoured to show that through the activities of
your Sanitary Department the huge sum of £100.000 was necessarily
expended by owners of property in repairs to premises in this Town
during that year.
1934 was no exception, for this sum is a yearly figure and
remains about constant.
During the year the Council had before them, for statutory
purposes, estimates of the cost of carrying out repairs to 241 houses.
These estimates—prepared by your Engineer and Surveyor— totalled
the sum of £8 877 10s. 0d., which is an average of a little less than
£37 per house.
The cost of repairs to these 241 houses ranged from £4 to £242
per house.
During the year 2,388 houses were put in repair without formal
action, and 84 premises were dealt with by formal action.
The total of 2,472 houses repaired at an average cost of £37
per house represents a sum of £91,464, from which a 10 per cent.
deduction for overhead charges leaves a nett figure of £82,318.
In addition 487 house drains were repaired through informal
action, and at an average cost of £5 per house represents a sum of
£2,435, which, added to £82,318, gives a round figure of £84,753.
If reference be made to the section of the Report dealing with
Factories on page 43 under the heading "2. Defects Found," it
will be seen that six new W.C.s were provided, 102 sanitary conveniences
were rendered fit, 37 cleansings were carried out, and
57 other defects were remedied.
The cleansing, etc., of 66 stable premises, provision of six
manure receptacles, the removal of 56 accumulations, together with
all those items of work carried out to special premises—other than
houses—detailed on page 24, together with other incidental works
to be found in the Report, is estimated to account for a round figure
of £20,000, thus accounting for the expenditure by owners of a sum
not less than £100,000 through your sanitary staff during the year.
