Circular 1661.—The number of cases in which medical aid
notices were issued during 1938 by midwives in accordance with
Rule E of the Central Midwives Board was:—

The cause of death was prematurity.
MATERNAL MORTALITY.
During 1938, seven deaths associated however slightly with
pregnancy and child-bearing were investigated for the completion
of enquiry forms.
Particulars relating to the seven deaths are given in the
accompanying table.

The following table shows the maternal mortality rates for 1938 (calculated on the three deaths assigned by the Registrar-General to Headings 29 and 30).
