Details of medical aid notices issued by midwives employed at
Thorpe Coombe are given in the Maternity Hospital report.
Compensation for Loss of Cases.—Compensation is made
to midwives by the payment of 10s. per confinement lost by reason
of the reference of the patient from the Council's Ante-Natal
Clinic to hospital on account of any abnormality.
Four claims for compensation were made during 1938. Hospital
treatment was required for all four cases owing to malpresentation.
Municipal Midwifery and Maternity Service.—The scheme
drawn up under the Midwives Act, 1936, and detailed in the Report
for 1937, became operative on January 1st, 1938.
Six whole-time midwives had previously been appointed by
your Council and two by the Walthamstow District Nursing Association
acting on your behalf.
The service has worked well and only a few minor complications
have arisen.
