Applications are made on special forms which give particulars
of income and rent and are scrutinised each week by lady members
of the Maternity and Child Welfare Committee who attend in rotation
in order to assess the applications on the scale which has
been approved.
Milk may either be granted free or at reduced cost, and the
following shows the amount and approximate cost of milk granted
by the Committee during 1937:—

Number of families assisted 1,146
Of the 6,454 applications, approximately 37 per cent, were from
families where the father was unemployed.

The weekly average of the income of 2,104 employed cases granted milk between September and the end of the year varied fiom a maximum of £2lis. 9d. to a minimum of £1 6s. 4¼d.
