If the 609 persons who had given Schick negative results are
added to the total of 3,613 immunised, the attack rate in this group
is lowered to 071 per 1,000 and it is raised in the non-immunised
group to 346 per 1,000, ie, nearly five times more than the
immunised group
Only one of the three cases of diphtheria in the immunised
group was of any real severity, and considering the amount of
membrane present there was a gratifying absence of toxnemia and
there were no complications
There was little doubt that although immunisation in this case
had not prevented an attack of diphtheria, it had unquestionably
helped to save the child's life
All these cases had been protected by the single dose method
which has now been discarded in favour of the two dose method
