3. (i) Closet Accommodation.— The number of cesspools in
use is fifteen, seven of which are situated in The Avenue. It is
anticipated that a new sewer will be constructed in The Avenue
during 1938, which will reduce the number of cesspools.
(ii) Public Cleansing.— The Cleansing Superintendent. Mr.
Eric Bell, M.I.P.C., A.R.S.I., reports as follows:—
"House Refuse Collection.— There has been no material
increase in the total weight of domestic refuse collected during the
year, although the increase in bulk which was so noticeable last year
has continued.
"No new vehicles have been purchased during the year.
"The usual weekly collection of house refuse has taken place,
except on Bank Holidays, etc., when the collection has been made
on the first working day afterwards. In every case householders
affected have been notified by handbills, or through the Press, of the
altered day of collection.
"Few requests have been received for the removal of special
articles of a bulky nature, but an increased number of requests have
been made for the clearance of accumulations of refuse left by
tenants vacating premises.
"The total weight of refuse collected during the twelve months
ended 31st December, 1937, was 27,617 tons, a slight increase over
the corresponding period last year, whilst there was a further
increase in the number of premises from which collections were
made.
"The average weight of refuse collected per day per 1,000
population has shown a slight increase over the previous year,
although it is still considerably below the average throughout the
country.
"Trade Refuse.—The contract system with traders has been
further extended during the year, and is proving very satisfactory
both to the traders concerned and to the Council.
"Refuse delivered by traders in their own vehicles amounted
to 500 tons, a considerable reduction on the previous year.
"Refuse Disposal.—During the year the whole of the refuse
disposal works were altered and extended.
"The Receiving Hopper, Elevator and Screen were duplicated.
Two new units were erected, and the buildings extended.
