TO THE CHAIRMAN AND MEMBERS OF THE MATERNITY
AND CHILD WELFARE COMMITTEE,
Ladies and Gentlemen,
I beg to present the following report on the Maternity and
Child Welfare work in the Borough during 1934.
The outstanding event of the year was the opening of Thorpe
Coombe Maternity Home in April. Within a year of opening 456
cases have been admitted and the Home has been recognised as a
training school for midwive.s. These two facts alone are sufficient
indication of its success, to which the Matron, Miss Bambridge,
has contributed in no small measure.
A site has been secured for permanent premises to house
the Highams Park Welfare Centre and it is hoped that building
will be commenced without undue delay.
I wish again to record my appreciation of your Committee's
help, the assistance of the voluntary workers in the Centres, and
the good work of the Staff generally.

I have the honour to be,
Your obedient Servant,
A. T. W. POWELL,
Medical Officer of Health, etc.
