In addition, materials were supplied to a local practitioner
for gratuitous injection and 8 children were successfully immunised
by him.
The cost of immunisation material per completed case (averaged
over the 36 completed cases) was 5s.
The attention of parents has been drawn to the facilities which
are available by the following means:—
(а) Advertisement in local press.
(б) Display of notices at all clinics.
(c) Distribution of leaflets by Infectious Disease Nurse during
removal of all Scarlet Fever and Diphtheria cases to
Hospital.
(d) Distribution of leaflets at all routine medical inspections.
(e) Distribution of leaflets during a localised outbreak of
diphtheria at any particular school.
The lack of response, even under item (e), has been truly
amazing.
Sir George Newman, Chief Medical Officer to the Ministry of
Health, has stated that ' 'no Local Authority responsible for the
health of children should be satisfied that it has done its duty until
every parent knows that children can be protected against Diphtheria
with safety and reasonable certainty of complete protection."
Thirty-four patients seen at the Clinic and suspected of
suffering from Diphtheria were given a total of 304,000 units of
Diphtheria antitoxin pending the result of swabbing.
Twelve children were recommended for convalescent home
treatment following discharge from the Isolation Hospital.
