There is thus no question as to the urgent need ot adequate
maternity beds in the Borough. The plans for the proposed Municipal
Maternity Home are in course of revision to comply with the
Ministry's requirements.

The following numbers of confinements occurred at the Institutions specified:—

Mothers' Hospital, Clapton177
Nursing Homes in Walthamstow148
Forest Gate Hospital58
Queen Mary's Hospital23
Total406

There are five Nursing Homes ill the Borough with a total
maximum accommodation of 20 maternity beds.
10. WALTHAMSTOW DISTRICT NURSING
ASSOCIATION.
The Walthamstow Nurses' Home of the Essex County Nursing
Association was taken over as from 1st July, 1931, by the District
Nursing Association, the staff being four qualified midwives.
By this date the Home had been completely redecorated and a
two-bed maternity ward and a labour ward had been provided.
Later in the year an additional two-bed ward was provided.
Your Council assist the Association by granting £10 worth of
tramway tokens per annum and also pay a retaining fee of ten guineas
per annum for the services of a Nurse for Puerperal Fever and Pyrexia
nursing or emergency midwifery.
Sister Ross states that the following work was done during
1931:—Maternity cases, 63; Midwifery cases, 179; total Confinements
attended, 242; Visits paid, 13,266.
During the last six months of 1931, 26 midwifery and maternity
cases had to be refused owing to insufficient accommodation.
11. CONSULTANT OBSTETRICIAN.
During 1931 the services of the panel of Consultants under the
Puerperal Fever and Pyrexia Regulations (referred to earlier in the
Report) were made available to Practitioners in any difficulty
arising during pregnancy, labour or the puerperium.
A Consultant's services were provided on eight occasions.
