tenancies. When it is remembered that each was a Category A case,
i.e., over three persons per room, the practical difficulties in abating
overcrowding will be apparent.
General Observations.
The average type of house contains three bedrooms, kitchen
and scullery. The primary defects found were dirty premises,
general dilapidations and dampness. How far dampness was prevalent
in houses was evidenced by the number of houses in which
new damp courses were inserted during the year, viz., 276. The
neglect to insert proper damp proof courses in main, dwarf and
sleeper walls during construction of houses was more apparent
than ever, and a considerable amount of good and sound work of a
structural nature in this connection was accomplished during the
year under review. These works were of a costly nature and much
patience had to be shewn and many interviews with property owners
were necessary to accomplish such improvements.
V. INSPECTION AND SUPERVISION OF FOOD.
(a) Milk Supply.
The average number of cows kept in the district was 14. The
cowsheds numbered two and 22 visits were paid by the Sanitary
Inspectors in addition to special visits paid by your Senior Sanitary
Inspector.
The number of retail purveyors of milk is 202, most of whom
carry on a general shop and sell milk in bottles as they receive it.
Three hundred and ninety-one visits were paid to the registered
premises of purveyors of milk during the year and there was a general
improvement in the standard of cleanliness observed.
During the year 72 samples of milk were taken for bacteriological
count and of these 36 were biologically tested for the presence of
the tubercle bacillus. In addition, two samples of Pasteurised Milk
were tested for tubercle only.

The samples taken are summarised below:—
