The following extracts taken from the monthly reports made to
the Public Health Committee show the experiences of the latter half
of the year:—
"Following the discovery of a case at the School Clinic on 4th July
all unvaccinated absentees from the School attended (Forest Road
Infants) were visited by Officers of the Health Department up to
the beginning of the School holidays and three further cases were
found which would otherwise have been missed. Thirteen secondary
cases were later traced to those four cases."
"The following examples will show the extreme susceptibility of
some families:—
(a) Five cases in four inter-related families.
(b) Four cases in one family (the whole family), re-vaccination
having been refused when advised.
(c) Four cases in two inter-related families; and
(d) Three cases in another family of four members.
One adult patient was found to have been at large for six days
(in a highly infectious condition) acting as a Bookmaker's tout until
arrested and convicted at Stratford Police Court, after having
travelled to and from that place by tramcar and omnibus."
"Another patient was found to have been at a Sunday School while
infectious. All contacts were visited and an otherwise missed case
was discovered."
"One patient was found to have been infected at a Girl Guides'
Camp by a girl whose rash appeared on the 23rd July and who went
to Camp on the 26th July and was probably infectious until returning
on 8th August. Over 30 contacts required supervision from this
case alone, but, curiously, no secondary case occurred."
"Another un-notified case had spent a holiday at Paignton and the
mother and brother were infected by him and were notified a few
days after returning to Walthamstow."
"One case had been infected at Maldon, Essex (determined by date
of onset, etc.). The Maldon Authorities were informed and further
cases were discovered at the infected house there."
"On the 5th September a case was notified who had attended
Gamuel Road Boys' School whilst infectious."
